umu-launcher on CachyOS: install, first run, settings and fixes

This is the Unified Launcher for Windows Games on Linux, to run Proton with fixes outside of Steam.

Install umu-launcher with pacman

  1. Install umu-launcher from the official cachyos repo. pacman checks the package signature before it installs.
    sudo pacman -S umu-launcher

First run

  1. Run a Windows game or launcher with umu-run and the path to its .exe. It runs in Proton inside the Steam runtime container, with no Steam needed.
    umu-run "/path/to/Game.exe"
  2. The first run downloads the Steam Runtime that Proton needs and moves its files to ~/.local/share/umu.

Key settings

  1. WINEPREFIX sets where the prefix is created. The default is ~/Games/umu/GAMEID.
  2. GAMEID sets the umu ID from the umu database, so the fixes for that game are applied. The default is umu-default. STORE sets the storefront, such as egs, and defaults to none.
  3. PROTONPATH sets the full path to a Proton build. Use the value GE-Proton to download and use the latest GE-Proton. The default is UMU-Proton.
    WINEPREFIX=$HOME/Games/mygame GAMEID=umu-default PROTONPATH=GE-Proton umu-run "/path/to/Game.exe"

Common fixes

A game fails to run

Run it again with UMU_LOG=1 for verbose umu logging, and PROTON_LOG=1 for a Proton log, then attach the logs to your issue report.

UMU_LOG=1 PROTON_LOG=1 umu-run "/path/to/Game.exe"

Where should I report problems with a third party Proton build?

The README asks you to report issues with compatibility tools it does not explicitly support to their own maintainers first.

Uninstall umu-launcher

  1. Remove umu-launcher and the dependencies nothing else needs.
    sudo pacman -Rns umu-launcher
