How do I install Neovim on CachyOS?

Run this in a terminal, then open Neovim from your app menu:

sudo pacman -S neovim-git

neovim-git is in the cachyos repo, the CachyOS project's own package repository, so pacman installs it directly with no AUR helper and no build script. The package is signed with the CachyOS repository key, and pacman checks the signature before it installs.

Which way should you pick?

WayCommandPackage
CachyOS repo (cachyos) Recommended
sudo pacman -S neovim-git
neovim-git (CachyOS cachyos)
Binary build
Fork of Vim aiming to improve user experience, plugins, and GUIs (nightly build).
sudo pacman -S neovim-nightly-bin
neovim-nightly-bin (CachyOS cachyos)

All of these are in the official cachyos repo. Pick one; builds of the same app usually conflict with each other.

What should I do after installing Neovim?

  1. Open Neovim from your app menu.
  2. Or run nvim in a terminal.
  3. Run pacman -Qi neovim-git to see the installed version and the optional dependencies.

How do I update or remove Neovim?

Update:

sudo pacman -Syu

Remove:

sudo pacman -Rns neovim-git

What is Neovim?

Vim-fork focused on extensibility and usability.

    3. libvterm is missing some features and moving too slowly. Evaluate if libghostty or libvaxis can replace libvterm. full support (including scrollback) for reflow. libvaxis is more like a "TUI sdk" for building TUI apps. It could perhaps replace parts of tui.c, and hopefully…

    5. raises an interesting idea: In Emacs, there’s this thing called the minibuffer. It’s just a regular buffer that Emacs uses for commands, prompts, and interactive input which expands what we would call the 'cmdheight', pushing the statusline up and displaying content. It creates a…

    8. This is a stub issue, will update it over time. Although "AI features" are not something we see a need for in Nvim core, I'm looking at the space and have noticed some "primitives" that are missing and require every plugin to reimplement things that are generally useful, even for…

    10. Continuation of #39209, based on my comment here. The recently merged #39845 adds a pair of text-objects: al for "all lines" and il for "inside line (line with no leading or trailing whitespace)". These are both useful text-objects, but they don't match well to each other as…

    13. When an LSP server supporting workspace pull diagnostics (such as Astral's ty or basedpyright) returns diagnostics for workspace files, Neovim creates unlisted buffers via vim.fn.bufadd and tracks them in Diagnostics.active: Because the LSP client is not attached to these…

    15. For a buffer named with a URL, such as fugitive:///repo/.git//0/models/a.sql, vim.filetype.match() passes vim.fs.abspath(name) to pattern and function matchers. abspath treats the URL as a relative path, so a filetype function gets /fugitive:/repo/.git/0/models/a.sql, and one…

    Neovim on CachyOS: questions

Is Neovim in the official CachyOS repo?

Yes. The neovim-git package is in the cachyos repo, version 0.13.0.r1953.g3ee26cf91f-1, built 2026-10-26. Install it with sudo pacman -S neovim-git.

Do I need an AUR helper for Neovim?

No. It comes from the cachyos repo, so plain pacman installs and updates it, and sudo pacman -Syu keeps it current.

    What is the Neovim command?

nvim. The package is called neovim-git.

Which Neovim package should I pick?

neovim-git is listed first here. The cachyos repo also has neovim-nightly-bin. Install only one of them.
