Waypaper on CachyOS: install, first run, settings and fixes

GUI wallpaper setter for Wayland and Xorg window managers. It works as a frontend for popular wallpaper backends like swaybg, swww, wallutils, hyprpaper and feh.

From the official CachyOS repo. Install with pacman, no AUR helper needed.

Install Waypaper with pacman

  1. Install waypaper from the official cachyos repo. pacman checks the package signature before it installs.
    sudo pacman -S waypaper

First run

  1. Waypaper is a front end, so install at least one wallpaper backend too, such as swaybg, hyprpaper, mpvpaper or awww on Wayland, or feh or xwallpaper on Xorg.
    sudo pacman -S swaybg
  2. Run waypaper to open the GUI and pick a wallpaper.
    waypaper
  3. To bring your wallpaper back after a restart, add this to your window manager's startup config.
    waypaper --restore

Key settings

  1. For a slideshow, open the slideshow panel from the options menu, set an interval and start it.
  2. GIF animations work with awww, mpvpaper or gslapper. Videos work with mpvpaper or gslapper. Multiple monitors work with awww, swaybg, hyprpaper or mpvpaper.
  3. For your own wallpaper command, set backend = none and post_command in the [Settings] section of the config file.

Common fixes

Nothing happens when I pick a wallpaper

Waypaper needs a backend installed, unless you use backend = none with a post_command. Install one of the supported backends.

The mpvpaper backend does not work

The mpvpaper backend needs socat for its IPC socket.

sudo pacman -S socat

Uninstall Waypaper

  1. Remove waypaper and the dependencies nothing else needs.
    sudo pacman -Rns waypaper
