Install paru with pacman

  1. Install paru from the official cachyos repo. pacman checks the package signature before it installs.
    sudo pacman -S paru

First run

  1. Search for a package and install it interactively.
    paru <target>
  2. Running paru with no arguments is an alias for paru -Syu.
    paru
  3. Generate the devel database for tracking packages built from git. This is only needed when you first start using paru.
    paru --gendb

Key settings

  1. Options and the config file are documented in the paru(8) and paru.conf(5) man pages.
    man paru.conf
  2. paru only shows color if color is on in pacman, so turn on Color in /etc/pacman.conf.
  3. For a file based review of PKGBUILDs, set FileManager in paru.conf to your file manager.
  4. To list search results from the bottom up, turn on BottomUp in paru.conf.
  5. Install bat to get syntax highlighting while you review a PKGBUILD.
    sudo pacman -S bat

Common fixes

paru cannot build a package

First check whether makepkg can build it. If makepkg fails too, report it to the package maintainer. If makepkg works, report it to paru on GitHub.

Check for and apply AUR updates only

Print available AUR updates with paru -Qua, then upgrade AUR packages with:

paru -Sua

Read a PKGBUILD or the AUR comments before installing

paru -Gp prints the PKGBUILD and paru -Gc prints the AUR comments of a package:

paru -Gc <target>

Uninstall paru

  1. Remove paru and the dependencies nothing else needs.
    sudo pacman -Rns paru
